Fenton made dolphin pieces in different shapes, sizes and colors. We’ll be amazed at the variety we see. You’re also welcome to share new finds or pieces you’d like identified. Brilliantly crafted glassware was made across the Islamic world, from the Iberian Peninsula to Central Asia, with the height of production taking place between the 9th and 14th centuries. Several museums around the world have stunning examples of Islamic glass in their collections and evidence from archaeological excavation provides fascinating insight into the creation and use of these objects. In the late 19th–early 20th centuries, European and American designers of decorative arts were enamored with Islamic artistry, and their own artistic output was often inspired by Islamic glass. This talk shares some highlights of the rich history of glass from the Islamic world.
About the Speaker
Carolyn Swan Needell, PhD, is the Carolyn and Richard Barry Curator of Glass at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA. A specialist in ancient and medieval glass, her research on the artistry and chemistry of glass has been published in the Journal of Glass Studies and the Journal of Archaeological Science. At the Chrysler Museum, Carrie is responsible for the care and research of 10,000 glass objects dating from antiquity to the contemporary era. She curates two glass exhibitions at the Chrysler each year that explore the art and history of glass, for example, Agony & Ecstasy: Contemporary Stained Glass by Judith Schaechter; Fantastic Creatures of the Venetian Lagoon: Glass 1875-1915; and Tapio Wirkkala
The Art Glass Forum, a nonprofit founded in 2000, supports scholarship about glass, from ancient shards to contemporary experiments. The November 19 online event, 6:30 to 7:30 pm, is free of charge to AGF members (all dues and contributions are tax deductible). AGF members automatically receive the lecture link within 24 hours of the event; no registration or RSVPs are necessary.Non-members can purchase tickets ($10) through Eventbrite here.
The presentation will be recorded and available to all members for a week after the event. AGF is a registered not-for-profit organization, so all dues and contributions are tax-deductible.
